The Henderson Church of Christ strives to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ and share His love with our neighbors. As Jesus says in John 13.34-35, “A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
If you should choose to worship with us, you will notice that we start our service with congregational singing. You may or may not be aware that most churches of Christ do not use instrumental music in their worship. We worship in this manner because musical instruments were not introduced into the worship of the church until several centuries following Jesus’ life on Earth. There is no doubt then, that a capella singing is pleasing to God as we worship Him.
After we sing a couple of hymns together, we will then go into the Lord’s Supper or Communion. We do this every first day of the week, in fact it is the central event in our worship service to God. The Lord’s Supper includes two emblems. The first one that is passed around is the “unleavened” bread (bread without yeast). This represents the body of Jesus upon the cross (Matthew 26.26). The second emblem that is given is the “fruit of the vine,” which is a nice way of saying “grape juice.” This symbolizes the blood of Jesus that was shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26.27-28).
After the Lord’s Supper, another tray will be passed around. This is for the collection of the congregation. It is for each person who has “prospered” to give back a portion of that to God (1 Corinthians 16.2). If you happen to worship with us, you should not feel obligated to give anything, but if you desire to do so, you are of course welcome.
Following the giving, we will have another hymn, and then those who have the ability to do so will stand for prayer. The prayer will be led by one of the members from where they are sitting. Once in a while, they may come to the front of the building - that is up to them, and whatever they feel comfortable doing.
After the prayer, and one more song we will have the sermon. The sermon will always be centered around a biblical theme and contain many passages from the Bible. On average the sermons at Henderson will last from a little over twenty minutes to thirty minutes. Once in a while one may go a little over, or even a little under. At the conclusion of every sermon, the minister will give what is known as the “invitation” in which anyone who needs to be baptized can make that need known, or perhaps they need to be “rededicated” or “restored.”
After any requests are taken care of, we will have another hymn, and a closing prayer. All in all, our worship service will last about an hour. If you visit us on Sunday evenings, it will be much the same, only the Lord’s Supper will be offered in a side room for anyone who was unable to take it in the morning. On Wednesday evenings, we have a couple songs, class, and then we come back together for a short five to ten minute devotional.
So, those are the mechanics of what we do when we assemble together. But church is so much more than that. It is a lifelong commitment to serve the one who loved us and gave Himself up for us that we may have abundant life in the here and now and eternal life in the hereafter.
We believe that how we live this life will echo through the archives of Heaven. That is why we are preparing for eternity. A question that we see a lot of people ask frequently in the book of Acts is, “What must I do to be saved?” In other words, “what do I need to do to prepare for eternity?” Of course, the Bible answers this question as well!
Hear the Word of God: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ” (Romans 10.17)
Believe the Word of God: “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11.6).
Repent: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” (Acts 3.19)
Confess: “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10.9).
Be Baptized: “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of the Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2.38)
Live Faithfully: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only me but also to all who have loved His appearing.” (2 Timothy 4.7-8)
At Henderson, you will be welcomed as a friend and you will be treated with kindness and respect. We truly hope that you will join us, and maybe make your home with us.
